Nip Training
Ferrets as kits naturally nip each other as a way of interacting and they learn through this which is why it is important to teach them the difference between playing and ouch. Most of the time nipping is an invitation to play but it can also be a warning. Nip training can be used for kits that need to learn the difference or adults that have never been corrected for nipping. Tapping them on the side of the nose gently can work on some but can also turn the ferret to be more aggressive as it may scare them or hurt them so this is not advised. Kits usually respond to voice discipline better and quicker. Once you have corrected the behaviour give them time out for a few minutes. It is also important to praise the good behaviour to teach them what to do to may you happy and get the attention which is what they want.
It is also important that you do not transfer any fear you may have of getting nipped as they will pick up this fear and be uncertain as to how to deal with it. Confidence will make them feel secure and once they feel secure they are more likely to do what you want. All kits are nippy as can be rescued ferrets so don't be discouraged. Kits also have very sharp teeth so you might try spraying your hands with Bitter Apple for the persistent fuzzy. One taste of this will usually discourage even the most severe nipper. For a new ferret give them time to settle in and let them come to you. Let them know that you are there before touching them so not to spooke them.
